Best in WordPress Design: Monemvasia Winery by K2 Design

K2’s website for Monemvasia Winery is a deliberate break from convention, vibrant, contemporary, and unmistakably modern, built entirely on WordPress using WooCommerce. In this edition of Best in WordPress Design, the Athens-based studio shares the creative vision and technical thinking behind a digital experience that challenges everything a winery website is expected to be.

This is the Best in WordPress Design. Our purpose is to highlight exceptional web design made with WordPress around the world. Each edition features a standout site and a short conversation with the creators behind it.

This month, we’re featuring K2 Studio, an award-winning Greek design studio with over three decades of experience, and their work for Monemvasia Winery, a site that deliberately steps away from the classic, heritage-heavy visual language of the wine world in favor of something confident, fresh, and entirely brand-driven. In this conversation with Vasileios Gkotsis, Head of Digital at K2, we explore how strategic thinking and creative ambition can transform a winery’s digital presence into something genuinely unexpected.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your studio, and your process?

K2 is an award-winning Greek design studio specializing in branding, websites, and creative campaigns. We believe that great brands deserve the world stage. Since 1988, we’ve been dedicated to crafting brands with a global reach. With a team of eclectic talents, we deliver a full range of services that get brands noticed, focusing on branding and digital experiences. Our strategy-driven creative approach has earned us lasting partnerships and achievements that reach far beyond Greece.

What inspired the creative direction behind your website?

The main creative vision behind the website was to create a contemporary aesthetic that clearly stands apart from the visual language commonly associated with winery websites, while still remaining faithful to the brand’s DNA.

We wanted the website to feel modern, fresh, and expressive, reflecting the personality and vision of the winery’s owners. Instead of following the traditional, often classic approach seen in the wine industry, we chose to emphasize a more vibrant and confident visual direction.

The photographic direction, combined with the typography and color palette, creates a visual language that feels both contemporary and authentic to the spirit of the winery.

Why WordPress? How did it support your vision?

WordPress and WooCommerce are the core platforms we have worked with for the past 15 years, during which we have delivered more than 500 digital projects.

“One of the main reasons we choose WordPress is the creative freedom it provides. By developing custom themes and templates, we ensure that our designers are not constrained by predefined structures or visual limitations.”

This approach allows our team to fully explore their ideas while maintaining the flexibility, scalability, and reliability that the WordPress ecosystem offers. As a result, we can create highly tailored digital experiences while still providing clients with a powerful and easy-to-manage content platform.

What challenges did you face while bringing this vision to life?

One of the main challenges was creating a seamless and intuitive navigation experience, both for booking winery visits and for purchasing products through the online store.

Since the website and its functionality were designed and developed from scratch, we focused heavily on structuring the user journey in a way that would feel simple and effortless for visitors. Particular attention was given to the Cart and Checkout experience, ensuring that the purchasing process remained clear, fast, and frictionless while maintaining the visual identity and overall aesthetic of the website.

At the same time, the design relies on large imagery and multiple transitions, which we wanted to feel visually impressive without negatively affecting the user experience or the website’s performance. Achieving this balance required careful optimization so that the visual richness of the site could coexist with fast loading times and smooth navigation.

How does the final website reflect your studio’s identity and approach?

This approach is part of how we work at K2. We combine strategic thinking, strong visual direction, and careful technical implementation to create digital experiences that are both expressive and functional.

“For us, a website is not simply a communication tool, but an extension of the brand itself”

A space where design, storytelling, and technology come together to create a distinctive online presence.

Many thanks to the K2 team for sharing their process and the thinking behind their work for Monemvasia Winery. Their approach is a reminder of how WordPress, in the right hands, can challenge the conventions of an entire industry.

Stay tuned for the next edition of Best in WordPress Design, where we continue exploring the makers pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the open web.
